What is a Lipoma?

A lipoma is a benign (non-cancerous), soft, slow-growing lump made up of fatty tissue, typically found just under the skin. It is usually painless, movable, and can occur anywhere in the body—but most commonly appears on the shoulders, back, arms, or thighs.

Causes

• Often idiopathic (without a clear cause)
• May run in families (genetic predisposition)
• More common in middle-aged adults

Symptoms

• Soft, doughy lump under the skin
• Usually painless, but may cause discomfort if it presses on nearby nerves
• May grow over time
• Cosmetic concern due to visibility or location

Treatment

Lipomas do not usually require treatment unless:

• They become painful
• They are increasing in size
• They are cosmetically bothersome

Treatment involves a minor surgical procedure to remove the lump. It is typically done under local anaesthesia as a day care surgery. There is minimal scarring, and patients can resume normal activities within a day or two.

What is a Corn?

A corn is a localized thickened area of skin, typically seen on the feet or toes, caused by repeated pressure or friction. It develops as the skin’s natural protective response but can become painful if not treated.

Causes

• Wearing ill-fitting shoes
• Foot deformities (like hammer toes or bunions)
• Excessive walking or standing
• Lack of proper foot hygiene or care

Symptoms

• Thickened, hardened bump on the foot or toe
• Pain while walking or wearing shoes
• May appear yellowish or grayish
• Central core may be seen in deeper corns

Treatment

Initially, conservative treatment may include:

• Padding and offloading pressure
• Use of corn caps or salicylic acid-based creams
• Wearing proper footwear

If pain persists or the corn recurs, surgical excision may be necessary. This is a minor outpatient procedure done under local anaesthesia with minimal downtime.
