Diabetic Foot Surgery

India is witnessing a sharp rise in diabetes due to sedentary lifestyles, job-related stress, lack of exercise, and poor dietary habits. As the number of diabetic patients increases, so do its complications — one of the most serious being Diabetic Foot.

Diabetic Foot refers to foot complications arising from uncontrolled diabetes, often triggered by unnoticed injuries due to diabetic neuropathy (loss of foot sensation). This leads to non-healing wounds, infections, ulcers, and even gangrene.

Symptoms

  • Numbness or reduced sensation in the foot
  • Accidental injuries that go unnoticed
  • Non-healing ulcers or wounds
  • Pus discharge or foot/toe discoloration
  • Blackening (necrosis) of tissue
  • Delayed wound healing due to poor blood circulation (atherosclerosis)

Treatment

Managing diabetic foot requires a multi-disciplinary approach involving a Diabetologist, Surgeon, Radiologist, Plastic Surgeon, and Podiatrist. Treatment includes:
  • Strict blood sugar control with insulin and a diabetic diet
  • Vascular evaluation of lower limb arteries; angioplasty may be needed to improve blood flow
  • Wound care: surgical debridement, removal of dead tissue, regular dressings
  • Advanced techniques: Vacuum-Assisted Closure (VAC) dressing, skin grafting, flap cover procedures
  • Customized diabetic footwear (MCR soles) to prevent further injuries
